“Mr. Vik brought a love of math to all of his students--from his daily (and invariably corny) math joke to rarely-seen-in-class topics like mass points, 25-point geometry, or the derivation of Kepler's laws using calculus.
By providing Scholarship Stipends to students for attending our Summer Camps, we're giving them the opportunity to see math as more than just ‘seventh period’, and to learn what a joy it is to do to mathematics.” -Paul J. Karafiol, Board Chair, Math Circles of Chicago
In honor of our long-time friend and supporter, Math Circles of Chicago is excited to announce the Steve Viktora Scholarship Fund. These funds will be used to offer $200 scholarships to middle school students from lower income families on Chicago’s south side. To earn this stipend, these students will participate in a fun and engaging two-week math enrichment camp in Chicago’s Back of the Yards neighborhood.
Yue Wu, proud former student of Mr. Vik, has challenged those who have likewise been impacted so dearly by Steve Viktora, at Kenwood, New Trier, or elsewhere. We know his reach is far.
“I’m delighted to donate up to fifty $200 Viktora Scholarship Stipends for fellow Summer Math Scholars in Back of the Yards. It’s a fitting recognition for Mr. Viktora’s long service to Chicago students, and we hope it’ll help unleash the potential of these Viktora Scholars’ in the years to come. Please join me to celebrate the joy of learning mathematics, one Viktora Scholar at a time!”
