I'm particularly proud this fall that MC2 has not only maintained its programming during the time of the pandemic, but has in fact expanded. By the end of 2020, 10 CPS teachers in under-resourced schools will have launched "Math Circles in a Box" programs in their virtual after school programs. By the end of the school year this number will be more than 20.
Like everyone, I hope by the fall of 2021 we'll be 'back to normal'. My hope is by then we will be in more than 30 schools, serving nearly as many children in afterschool spaces as we are in our 8 'sites' (locations that serve children from many different schools at the same time). We are getting closer and closer to achieving our mission to, "Create opportunities for ALL children across Chicago to develop a passion for mathematics".
This work has to be done with care. It's only worth expanding if we can maintain the quality of our programs. Our new teachers need coaching, workshops, time to partner with other teachers and time to reflect. MC2 funding pays for every facet of producing high quality programming. Your support makes it possible to do this work the right way.
How do I know we are doing it the right way? Here are just a few quotes from our fall student survey:
- I like the way the math circles are at the moment. There's also a nice sense of community within them. Breakout rooms along with icebreakers help me familiarize with the facilitators and students of the math circles. Thank you!
- I love being able to discuss math freely and learning new forms of math from riddles.
- I love that we can communicate and share different perspectives, it is fun!
- I loved breakout rooms and the problems like magic square and other problems. The classes are challenging but not so challenging that I give up.
- I liked how Math Circles helped me understand things and make Math so much more enjoyable.
- Math circles sessions make me think differently from how I normally do.
These children create a community and value it. Consider the phrases, "To discuss math freely," "Share different perspectives," "Not so challenging that I give up," "Make me think differently". This is what we mean by, 'Math enrichment for all'.
With your help we will continue to push to make this mathematical experience widespread. The size of our impact stems from your generosity. Thank you for helping me and my team reach children across the city!
Sincerely,
Doug
